Imperial War Museum

Connecting stories, places and people of the First World War across Greater Manchester

Back to Work

Imperial War Museum North wanted to encourage and empower users to track the lives, stories and impact of the First World War across Greater Manchester.

We worked with Imperial War Museum North to bring together content about the First World War from 26 cultural and heritage organisations within the Greater Manchester Centenary Partnership.

Following workshops with representatives from the partnership, we developed the concept of Centenary Connections – themed journeys within which can be found many archive assets kept in museums, archives, libraries and galleries as well as landmarks across Greater Manchester.

This concept formed the basis of the development of a mobile app (iOS and Android), which is supported by a desktop browser interface and developed by our sister company Nymbol.

We worked closely with Learning and Engagement specialist Catherine Mailhac to curate, schedule and publish all content for the app.

The app and website encourage users to take a physical journey across the area – following stories through the archive across the range of organisations and landmarks.

Press features in Create Hub, Guardian Culture Professionals, Manchester Evening News, Birmingham Post, as well as bill boards across the Greater Manchester Tram Network. There were 250 downloads of the iPhone app within first month of release.
