Objectives

The Wenlock Olympian Society (WOS) is custodian of the internationally important archives of William Penny Brookes. Brookes’ Wenlock Olympian Games, held during the 19th century, were a direct precursor and inspiration to the modern Olympic movement.

WOS wanted to share this significant archive digitally, opening it up to new audiences while ensuring the collection could be managed sustainably and presented in a way that reflected its historical importance. The key objectives were to:

Share the William Penny Brookes archive with wider, global audiences

Create a contemporary, mobile-first platform suitable for modern digital users

Enable meaningful engagement with archive images online

Support income generation through the sale of digital image copies

Deliver a solution that could grow over time as the collection expanded

Solutions

We worked closely with the Wenlock Olympian Society to develop a bespoke instance of Corals, our white-label photo archive platform designed specifically for archives, museums and libraries.

Structured metadata

The project included the development of tailored metadata to support discovery and exploration, the application of WOS brand assets, and the conversion and upload of archive photography. The result is a flexible, easy-to-manage platform that balances accessibility with curatorial control.

User-friendly experience

By combining robust collections management with a user-friendly front-end experience, the platform enables WOS to confidently share their archive online and engage new audiences with the story of William Penny Brookes and the origins of the Olympic movement.
