Objectives

Opening in Clerkenwell, London in 2026, the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration (QBCI) will be a landmark destination dedicated to the art and practice of illustration. Not only will it be a celebration of this important illustrator, it will also be a place to make, see, and discuss illustration, combining changing galleries, creative studios, and green spaces.

The galleries will host a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions, drawing from Quentin Blake’s remarkable archive as well as celebrating a broad range of contemporary and historical illustrators. Alongside exhibitions, a dedicated learning studio will support schools, families and adult learners with workshops, classes and creative activities, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to education and engagement.

The AV design needs to support QBCI’s ambition to be radically inclusive, with welcoming and accessible spaces for all visitors and staff. This means the technology must be available to all, supporting people with different technical competencies, physical abilities and access needs.

We established five value drivers with the team to support the development of the design:

Minimalistic impact on heritage aesthetics within spaces

Radically inclusive

Aid flexible use of spaces

Brings digital audience into the experience

Support the overarching values: Imaginative, Welcoming and Relevant

Solutions

We have been working with the team at QBCI to design the audio visual and digital visitor experience at the centre. Our work started with the team in 2023, and has progressed from conceptual design through to technical design.

Earlier this summer we finalised a detailed technical audio-visual and IT design with QBCI which included a cost plan and drawings. This informed the tendering process for the installation of new equipment into the centre in early 2026.
